Reception for As it Exists: Photo Practicum

Monday, December 5, 2022
Emerson College’s VM 492 Photo Practicum course allows students the opportunity to deeply research and consider a photographically based project as an advanced capstone experience. After completing other introductory and intermediate photography courses, technical abilities are honed, and the first conceptual insights are made over several semesters.  The students who then persist into Photo Practicum, or the BFA Photography Option, seek these opportunities as a way to push themselves and their photographic visions even further. Photo Practicum builds on all previous photographic experience and demands a sustained vision in the form of individual semester-long, or year-long BFA projects. This exhibition, a result of those efforts, is conceived, organized, and executed by the students in the class.
Every decision made by each of these artists, including the ideas they research, their subjects, written statements, and modes of presentation are the culmination of months of individual work and exploration. The exhibition itself is also a months-long collaborative effort with an additional sustained focus on planning and logistics.  It also emphasizes the critical, aesthetic, and conceptual u nderpinnings of each artists’ work and the synergy between those works in a single shared space.
This class considered their individual work and that of their peers, collectively naming this exhibition: As It Exists.
